As a zombie fan, and a fan of The Walking Dead series on AMC, I wanted to do a kind of fun piece on zombie self defense. In a recent episode of the show, two of the main characters discussed the use of knives instead of firearms to fight off the zombie horde.
In this video I talk about my choice for a SHTF tool (providing I could choose just one). You have to watch the video to see what I would choose.
Of course, this is just my opinion, but I think the mental exercise is useful in analyzing the characteristics of various implements.
Naturally firearms are a great choice for a number of reasons – they are powerful lethal weapons that can strike at a distance. However, they require ammo and are prone to failing if not kept clean and well maintained.
Therefore, I would choose a melee weapon, one that was easy to carry and use and not prone to failure. I would choose a proven tool that was combat effective. A plus would be if it had utility value as well.
